Legendary Games on Indonesia’s Independence Day

August has arrived! This month, we will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day on 17th August. Every year, Indonesians look forward to this joyous occasion filled with celebrations and exciting competitions in the neighbourhood. In this article, we are taking you to see some of the legendary games that are traditionally part of Independence Day festivities.

Tug of War
The traditional team game typically involves two teams with five to ten people in each team. With a 30 to 50 meters length of rope, the centre of the rope will be marked with a cloth or red color. Each team starts with 2.5 meters away from the central line. The winning team is the one who can pull the opposing team across the middle line.

Cracker Eating
One of the most anticipated games on Independence Day is the cracker-eating competition. Kids and adults can enjoy this game, depending on the neighbourhood. The aim is to finish eating a hanging cracker with hands in the back, making it challenging as the cracker dances and jiggles.

Palm Tree Climbing
Another popular team competition on Independence Day is the palm tree climbing competition. Each team consists of 4-5 people depending on the tree’s height. They have to make their best strategy to climb a slippery and greasy palm tree to reach the prizes hanging at the top. These prizes vary from cash, household supplies, dry goods, and many more!
